The 19th century history of Karolinska Institutet stretches
back to a Royal decree to quickly train Army Surgeons.
It continues with the build up of a natural scientific
research tradition which, by the end of the century
saw Karolinska Institutet become established as a leading
medical university. This research tradition soon catches
